New York & Jerusalem: Jewish Theological Seminary Of America & Shocken, 1997. Hardback. ISBN: 9654560224 9789654560221. Cloth, 8vo, 87, 362, xvi pages, plus [12] pages of plates (facsimiles of genizah fragments) 29 cm. In Hebrew. Title page and introduction also in English. Includes bibliographical references and indexes. This very-well received work elicited many reviews in the Jewish Studies press; see Steven Fine: “Review of Neil Danzig, A Catalog of Fragments …” in Hebrew Studies, vol. 41 (2000); as well as Ezra Chwat, “Danzig’s Catalog of Halakhah and Midrash Fragments in the E.N. Adler Collection and its Usage as a Research Tool,” in Jewish Quarterly Review 90, 3-4 (2000): 405-415. The book also received this praise from Heidi G. Lerner & Seth Jerchower in their “The Penn/Cambridge Genizah Fragment Project: Issues in Description, Access, and Reunification” (Philadelphia, 2006): "Danzig’s 1997 catalog of Rabbinic fragments at the Library of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, while oriented upon the holdings of one local collection, exhaustively provides cross-matches and concordances. " The Cairo Geniza is a collection of almost 280,000 Jewish manuscript fragments found in the Genizah or storeroom of the Ben Ezra Synagogue in Fustat, presently Old Cairo, Egypt. Some additional fragments were found in the Basatin cemetery east of Old Cairo, and the collection includes a number of old documents bought in Cairo in the later 19th century. It is presently dispersed among a number of libraries, including the libraries of Cambridge University and the University of Manchester…. In 1896, English travelers Agnes S. Lewis and Margaret D. Gibson returned from Egypt with fragments from the genizah they considered to be of interest, and showed them to Solomon Schechter at Cambridge. Schechter, already aware of the Genizah but not of its significance, immediately recognized the importance of the material. He later went to Egypt, acquired many documents, and brought the contents of the Genizah to scholarly and popular attention….The Taylor-Schechter collection at Cambridge has nearly 193,000 fragments (137,000 shelf-marks); there are a further 31,000 fragments at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America. Also, the John Rylands University Library in Manchester holds a collection of over 11,000 fragments…” (Wikipedia, 2011). SUBJECT(S): Cairo Genizah -- Catalogs. 39. Finkelstein, Louis. SIFRE ON DEUTERONOMY (2ND EDITION). New York : Jewish Theological Seminary of America, 2001. Cloth. 431 p. ; 26 cm. ISBN: 9654560097 9789654560092 Sifré to Deuteronomy, systematic, verse by verse commentary to the book of Deuteronomy by the sages of Rabbinic Judaism. Since the Mishnah(c. 200 ce) and the Tosefta(c. 250 ce) are cited verbatim, a probable date for the work is c. 300 ce. Out of cases and examples, the sages sought generalizations and governing principles. The document’s compilers took the details of cases and carefully reframed them into rules that then pertained to all cases. These rules show what details restrict the prevailing law to the conditions of the case, and what details exemplify the encompassing traits of the overall law. Four principal topics comprise the document’s propositions—the first three yield systematic statements that concern the relationships between Israel(the Jewish people) and God, with special reference to the covenant, the Torah, and the land; Israel and the nations, with interest in Israel’s history, past, present, and future, and how that cyclic time is to be recognized; and Israel on its own terms, focusing upon Israel’s distinctive leadership. The fourth rubric examines prevailing modes of thought that demonstrate the inner structure of intellect—whether that be the intellect underlying sifré itself, the cases of scripture, or the encompassing rules." 57. Bokser, Baruch M. THE ORIGINS OF THE SEDER: THE PASSOVER RITE AND EARLY RABBINIC JUDAISM. New York, JTS Press, 2002. ISBN: 0873340876. Paperback, xix, 188 pages, illustrated, 24 cm. The Passover and its rite are central in the history of Judaism and Christianity. Explaining how the Passover evening celebration, the seder, became one of the most popular Jewish rituals, Baruch M. Bokser shows how it was based on and transformed a biblical sacrificial meal. Bokser demonstrates the significance of the motif of Passover in ancient Judaism, indicating why Jews and Christians employed it to express hopes for redemption. And he also illuminates the process of historical development through the interaction of a traditional heritage with contemporary and outside cultural influences. This is a fascinating book which will add much to our understanding of Judaism and Christianity and of the nature of religion in a changing world. Baruch Bokser was ordained as a rabbi at Jewish Theological Seminary and also received a Ph. D. In religious studies from Brown University. Beginning in 1974, he taught at the University of California at Berkeley, leaving in 1982 for Dropsie College in Philadelphia (now the Annenberg Research Institute for Judaic and Near Eastern Studies) . Then in 1986, Bokser returned to the Jewish Theological Seminary to join the faculty and where, at his early death at age 44 in 1990, he was the director of the program in ancient Judaism. "Packs facts, analysis and insight into its relatively short 141 pages of text and footnotes. The hypothesis and argument are clearly spelled [out] and and then supported by detailed references to various Talmud and Mishnah sections which are reproduced as necessary. Although...reprinted in 2002, it is current and consistent with more recent works. I read the book in the weeks leading up to 2009 Passover holidays and found much in Dr. Bokser's work to work into the actual Seder and ignite the interest of those present. In essence, Dr. Bokser makes a very persuasive case that the Passover Seder, as molded in the Hagaddah, was one of the key pillars for the survival of Judaism after the catastrophic destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C. E. Certainly, he establishes that the basics of the Seder as we know it today with its emphasis on freedom, community and symbolic ritual owes its genesis to the Tanna and the Amora of the centuries following the destruction" (Jerome Hoffman, Amazon review) . 63. תוספתא כפשוטה : באור ארוך לתוספתא. THE TOSEFTA AND TOSEFTA KI-FSHUTAH, COMPLETE IN 12 VOLS. New York, Jewish Theological Press. 2001. Four Orders of the Tosefta (Zera’im, Mo’ed, Nashim, and Nezikin) according to Codex Vienna, with variants, references to parallel passages in Talmudic literature and commentary. Professor Rabbi Saul Lieberman, Talmudic scholar and researcher and for many years Rector of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, devoted much of his study to the systematic elucidation of the Tosefta. He undertook the publication of the Tosefta text, based on manuscripts and accompanied by brief explanatory notes, and of an extensive commentary called Tosefta ki-Fshutah. The latter combined philological research and historical observations with a discussion of the entire Talmudic and Rabbinic literature in which the relevant Tosefta text is either commented upon or quoted. Prof. Lieberman’s scholarship demonstrates how he combines vast erudition in all fields of Talmudic and Rabbinic literature with a penetrating knowledge of the classical world. Prof. Lieberman opened new pathways to the life, institutions, beliefs and literary products of Jewish Palestine in the talmudic period. $25.00 per volume.

In his enlightening discussion of one of the most important topics in Jewish thought today, Prof. Roth presents and analyzes the primary Talmudic and rabbinic sources relating to the legal and extralegal factors that go into the process of halakhic decision-making. He leads the reader through the entire process, step by step. The concepts of Biblical versus rabinnic legislation, the role of precedent and custom, extra legal factors (science, technology, medicine, sociology, economics, ethics and psychology) the scope of rabbinic authority, the qualifications for halakhic decision-making authority-all these are taken up and placed in context of the question of legitimacy and illegitimacy, authenticity and in authenticity. All the pressing and controversial questions of our time-women's rights and obligations: the ordination of women, their inclusion into a minyan, prenuptial agreements regarding divorce, the abolition of the second day of the festivals-are bound up with the issues discussed in this book. Anyone concerned with these and similar matters will gain a far broader and deeper appreciation for the real issues involved. $25.00

ISBN: 0873340914 9780873340915. Textual Knowledge: Teaching the Bible in Theory and in Practice is a book aimed at anyone who wishes to explore what it means to teach the Bible, one of the foundational texts of Western culture. In this volume the author explores the largest issues involved in Bible teaching: What are our purposes? What are the outcomes that we are looking for? How do we conceptualize the Bible as a subject matter? How do we develop theories of Bible teaching? And how do we move from theory to practice? Looking at a variety of alternative conceptions, Textual Knowledge helps offer clarity about a teacher's goals and practical advice about what it means to attain those goals. In addition the book explores the relationship between knowledge of Bible and teaching the Bible. What kind of knowledge does the Bible teacher need to have? How must that knowledge of subject matter be structured and conceptualized? How might differing scholarly conceptions of the discipline influence teachers' ways of thinking about the Bible? Drawing upon recent research in the field of general education, the author draw connections to the domain of Bible education. As a book that embraces both theoretical issues and practical concerns, Textual Knowledge explores matters of central concern to Jewish educators in particular, but is relevant to educators from other religious traditions and for those teaching the Bible in secular institutions such as universities as well. At its heart the author seeks to improve Bible pedagogy-making it deeper, richer, more reflective, and more powerful for students of any age and in any setting. $25.00

  91. Rovner, Jay. THE MA`SAR KESAFIM LEDGER OF MORDECAI ZEEV EHRENPREIS OF LVOV. New York : Jewish Theological Seminary of America, 2003. Cloth, 86 + 41 p. : facsims., map ; 25 cm. ISBN: 9654560372 9789654560375. Ma´sar kesafim (income tithing) is a long-standing Jewish practice. First mentioned in a midrash of a third/fourth-century scholar, it was popularized in the Middle Ages among Ashkenazic Jewry, who not only designated communal tax obligations as ma´aser, but also developed ma´sar kesafim as a practice of individuals desirous of habituating themselves to give to charity in a disciplined and ongoing fashion. Individual Jews dedicate themselves to this personal practice to the present day. Although Pinkese ma´sar kesafim (income tithe ledgers) are mentioned here and there in the literature, none have yet been found and published. Fortunately, Mordecai Zeev Ehrenpreis, a kind-hearted Jew in mid-nineteenth century Lvov (Lemberg), took a vow to practice ma´sar kesafim one year before he married, kept a detailed record of the income and disbursements of this fund, and eventually bequeathed us his Pinkas. This most informative and fascinating document is edited and published herein. Ehrenpreis commences with a detailed protocol enumerating the nature and conditions of his vow; he also intersperses his accounts with eloquent meditations on his uncertain financial state and on dangers confronting his family, providing the reader a full image of his world. A comprehensive introduction examines the history and practice of ma´sar kesafim, tracing the stages in its development as well as the meaning it held for Ehrenpreis. Jay Rovner holds a Ph.D. in Talmud and Rabbinics from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, where he serves as the Manuscript Bibliographer of its library. He has published studies of the development of the Talmud and the nature of the Stammaitic component of its text, and on Jewish liturgy and its development. $25.00
